Halloween!

It's our first Halloween in NYC! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love making costumes and dressing up. NYC has a lot of creatie and artistic people so I was very excited to see the different costumes.
Jake dressed up as a bootleg Jake Sully from the movie Avatar (the blue people one, not the cartoon!). He looked so funny.
I dressed up as the character Power from the anime Chainsaw Man. She's a devil who has a pet cat (I made Ruby pose as the cat) We went to a really cool event on Halloween with our friends Abbie and Ross. Abbie and Ross dressed up as characters from the TV show Fallout. Abbie was the Ghoul and Ross was a vault dweller from the show.
The event was at a venue called the Knockdown Center. It wasn't to far from our apartment, we took the subway and then walked another 20 minutes.
The Knockdown Center is really cool. It's an indooor and outdoor space. They have a really big main room for concerts and then smaller side rooms.
At the Halloween event, there were about 20 different bands. 4 bands were playing at a time. The bands were all dressed up in costumes and playing covers of other bands.
So we saw a band dressed as ABBA, a band dressed as the B-52's, and a band dressed as the band T. Rex. It was a ot of fun. There was also a photo booth to get your picture taken. And also a small room playing black and white horror movies, so if you got tired of all the loud music, you could go sit and watch a movie!
Jake has also been taking pictures of cool halloween decorations he sees throughout the city. I'll share some of those.
Halloween in NYC was pretty interesting. OA stores were giving out candy, so kids would go trick-or-treat there! They would also trick-or-treat at the houses and apartments but it was interesting seeing so many other places giving out candy.

All Saints Day Costume Contest

For background, there is a social media account I follow called the Greedy Peasant. He does a lot of medieval inspired costumes and joke skits. I found out he is based out of NYC, and this year was holding a 'Saintly Couture' All Saints Day Costume contest at a church in Brooklyn called St Pauls Episcopal Church.
The goal was to make a costume inspired by a Saint. I went as an interpretation of St Lucy. She is the paratron saint of blindness and eye trouble.
She is often depicted as carrying her eyes. I thrifted most of my outfit or used items I already had. I wore a red dress that I made myself, a shawl that was a table cloth I thrifted, and a lamp that I took the bulb out of to turn into a headdress! Tassels were a theme of the costume contest, so when I saw the lamp with tassels I knew I had to use it.
There were so many amazing costumes and different interpretations of the catholic saints. My favorite was someone who made her 'halo' out of gold colored plastic silverware. I ended up winning in a category of the contest. The judges really liked my lamp-turned-headdress, so I won best in eyewear.
The church itself was beautiful. It's 175 years old and has a lot of beautiful artwork and sculptures. It's still an active church.

The reliquary sisters. They were the 'judges' of the contest. Each puppet was hand made paper mache! They looked so impressive.
